The Second Mile

www.thesecondmile.org

The Second Mile, founded in 1977 in State College, Pennsylvania, is a non-profit organizationproviding nine prevention, early prevention and community-based programs to over 100,000 youth throughout Pennsylvania. The Second Mile challenges young people to achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing opportunities for them to develop positive life skills and self-esteem. The organization also provides education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth today.

Automated Records Centre President Mike Sullivan, while serving on the State Board of Directors and as Chair of The Second Mile Development Committee, also served as Coordinator for The Second Mile's "Friend Fitness Program." This program is an individualized strength training and mentoring to provide adolescents with positive adult role models as they work to reach personal, academic, and fitness goals. It is a free program currently available to youth in Centre, Chester and Clinton counties. Mike continues to work with the program today in an advisory role.

Teens are paired with committed Friend Fitness mentors, adult volunteers who serve not only as partners for bi-weekly workouts, but also as consultants for achievement of goals. Mentors offer undivided attention during workouts, focus on the students' goals, monitor and promote attendance, and recognize and celebrate the adolescents' accomplishments. As a result of this positive support and guidance, students involved in the program report that they feel better about themselves, improve their school performances, and make positive behavior changes.

"I have been fortunate throughout my life to have had some great role models and feel that it is important to give back to our youth of today," Mike says of his commitment to The Second Mile and the youth it serves.

Centre Volunteers in Medicine

CVIM is a non-profit corporation dedicated to understanding and serving the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved population of Centre County, Pennsylvania. Specifically, CVIM's target population is the working poor, a group in a unique predicament when it comes to healthcare. Traditionally, there has been a gap in the healthcare system for the working poor because they make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but they don't make enough money to be able to buy health insurance. CVIM's services include access to free acute and preventive medical care to residents of the county that meet certain eligibility criteria. They also provide referrals to specialists as necessary and referrals to other social services for which patients might qualify.

This year, Automated President Mike Sullivan and 15 friends and family members participated in CVIM's Boston Marathon Challenge, raising $45,000 to support CVIM and its initiatives. They look forward to breaking $50,000 in 2007.
